Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
